 hoenicians of Mexican descent contributed in immeasurable ways to the esta
 blishment\, growth\, and development of the valley. The political\, social
 \, economic\, and cultural challenges that Mexican Americans faced\, as we
 ll as their countless notable achievements\, have never before been featur
 ed in a major exhibition at the Phoenix Museum of History until now. The P
 hoenix Museum of History will share these stories with the public through 
 the exhibition.\n\nEl Espejo Mexico Americano: The Mexican American Mirror
  explores the contributions of this community to the valley's culture\, id
 entity and sense of place through photographs\, artifacts\, video clips\, 
 music and hands-on activities. Mexican American labor made possible early 
 agriculture and the development of barrios\, Spanish language newspapers a
 nd churches helped to provide a sense of cohesion and unity among Mexican 
 Americans. Mutual aid societies\, labor organizations and civil rights gro
 ups helped community members achieve equality\, justice\, and political po
 wer while theaters\, radio programs and cultural celebrations provided ent
 ertainment within the community that also appealed to the entire populatio
 n of Phoenix. From la madre de Phoenix\, Trinidad Escalante Swilling\, thr
 ough the election of the state's first and only Mexican American governor\
 , Raul Castro\, the Mexican American community's significant history refle
