Underworlderness
June 6, 2008-January 18, 2009
Navajo artist Tony Abeyta's Underworlderness exhibition will explore the Navajo underworld, the current world and our relationship to the cosmos in a series of ink and charcoal drawings. The south wall of the Crossroads Gallery will feature a large-scale installation created by using subtle ink washes and vine charcoal onto large paper panels installed on the wall. Other walls in the gallery will feature large-scale black-and-white drawings, as well as video installations by Abeyta's 17-year-old son Gabriel. The video installation will depict a reverse time-lapse view of the installation's process. This exhibition will serve as an experiment for Abeyta as well as the audience as they observe the artist in action. Abeyta will create the south wall artwork during museum hours, beginning approximately two weeks before the opening. During this time, museum patrons can interact with the artists, ask questions and serve as witnesses of Abeyta's strictly creative endeavor. Abeyta never knows exactly what will spring from his unconsciousness and works from instinct. The entire process will prove to be enthralling to observe, and the finished product promises to be unlike anything seen in the Phoenix art scene in years. Underworlderness will speak to the Navajo belief that humans emerged from the Earth and that the Earth is our creator. The ideas and artwork presented are organic, natural and botanical in nature and therefore closely tied with environmental causes. The overall effect in the gallery will create an environment rather than just a simple viewing room. Exhibition opens to the public on Phoenix First Friday, June 6, 2008, 8:00pm and runs through January 18, 2009. The opening is free and open to the public.

The weather was perfect for the event and the dancers were unbelivable. For years my husband and I have attended the event, watching some of the most spellbinding and graceful athletes perform in spectacular outfits to haunting music. Their ability to dance with hoops at all ages is inspiring. We have watched several young dancers grow over the years into champions known throughout the world...Kevin Duncan and Nakotah LaRance are super stars in the field. Eli Manning, Tiger Woods, and Steve Nash are great but these dancers from all over the world are Champions too. We could not stay all day but assumed the winners would be written up in the paper the next day. Wrong! Nothing was in The Republic Monday or Tuesday. What a disappointment. Hopefully, when this world event happens next year the will be better coverage (or at least some). Collapse

Event Name: Heard Museum Guild Library Book Sale & Treasure Market
"They can't count"
Review posted by: Alan Singletary from Tuscon, Az, Jan 27, 2008
There were not 30,000 books there. At best they had 15,000. And the prices were high, mostly, but there are a few good bargains.
