Earth Day 5k and Green Expo

In an effort to educate residents how easy and fun it is to be environmentally-friendly and show some of the beauty of the city, the City of Tempe will host its first Earth Day 5k and Green Expo presented by Miravista Holdings. The event will be a fun romp at sunset on the south side of Tempe Town Lake starting at the Tempe Center for the Arts, Rio Salado Parkway and Hardy Drive. A 10-foot tall, squeezable, plush earth will be at the starting line, compliments of Tempe Marketplace and Art One Gallery. Walk on up and give the earth a hug. Mother Nature will run with participants. Anyone who beats her time on the course will win a prize. She's expected to run 8 minute miles, not bad for an old gal. People are encouraged to dress like earth-friendly items, like bees, flowers, even hybrid cars. The best entries will win prizes. Beatles cover band Ringo McLennonSon will entertain. Everyone who finishes the 3.1 mile walk/run will receive a flower from KaBloom. The Green Expo will feature environmentally-friendly businesses, as well as a City of Tempe Pavilion dedicated to helping people recycle, reuse and be more sustainable. Tempe Neighborhood Services will collect old tennis shoes. The shoes are ground up to become soft fill for safer playground floors. Whole Foods will give reusable grocery bags to the first 300 runners to sign up for the event. They will also sample their new sports drink on site. Jamba Juice will sample its wares and Sweet Tomatoes will provide food to those registered for the event. Proceeds from the race benefit a scholarship fund for the Arizona State University School of Sustainability.
