BlackPoet Ventures presents poet-playwright Ntozake Shange's first and most well-known play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When The Rainbow Is Enuf. A series of 20 poems - referred to as a choreopoem, which includes dance, song and poetry - the 1975 Tony and Obie award-winning drama is performed by a cast of seven nameless women each known only by a color. It is a groundbreaking tribute to Black women who strive for and develop a sense of self in the face of loneliness, rejection, pain and rape. For this special Mother's Day weekend showing, each performance will recognize seven different African-American women in the Valley who epitomize the power of womanhood. In its third season, BlackPoet Ventures is one of the fastest growing arts organizations in the Valley merging poetry and theatre. The multimedia performance arts and entertainment company is dedicated to promoting, supporting and enhancing the oral tradition artistry of poetry and spoken words movements of the African Diaspora.
