They're no strangers to this Salt River Valley, these Mexicanos who built Phoenix. Phoenix was founded in 1868, and by 1877, 500 people lived here, half of whom were Mexicanos. By 1876, Mexican Americans comprised more than 20 percent of registered voters in Phoenix. The city grew, and it was Mexicano labor that built the adobe town. In her presentation, Dr. Christine Marin, the Curator/Archivist and Historian of the Chicano/a Research Collection at ASU's Hayden Library, provides examples of how Mexicanos, Mexican Americans, made contributions to the history and development of early Phoenix.
