Presented by El Consulado General de Mexico & Borderlands Theater Company. The traditional "Pastorela" was introduced in Mexico in the 16th century by religious groups. Pastorelas are humorous and light plays. Angels and devils fight for the souls of brave shepherds, sheep and dogs as they trek to Bethlehem to witness the Nativity. They are written in verse, and blend political satire, popular culture and Christmas carols (villancicos). This ancient folk tradition is still very strong in Mexico. Featuring superstars: Albert Soto, Arturo Martinez, Matt Staples, Cici Olivar, Norma Medina, Rob Rowden, Suzanne Darrell, and James Workman. A Southwestern border tradition full of levity and beautiful tunes, accompanied by the A'Cim Waila Band and a gran piņata at the end of the performance, "La Pastorela del Valle" will be featured in Phoenix, for the first time, with the hope of making it a yearly tradition.
