    When an unmarried woman in 19th century Vietnam has a child, the village elders decree that she must die and that the child – a boy – be given to the river gods. A major storm changes all that. Thereafter the life of Ly An is one of misery and little joy. Those who actually decide her destiny are three brothers, two of whom gamble for the right to sleep with her. Throughout her travails Ly An keeps her own counsel and survives with dignity, becoming the guiding force in the lives of all the men she encounters. Not the least of these is her son who – as an adult – seeks to understand the mystery of his mother’s life. The narrative is non-linear, turning round and round upon itself, until it reaches its end. BRIDE OF SILENCE is exquisitely photographed. The scenery is sensuous and almost palpable. Here’s one film you won’t soon forget.
