Add Review/CommentWith LOOK BOTH WAYS, Australian filmmaker Sarah Watt joins the limited but exalted ranks of animators who have successfully graduated to live action (Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton). She extends the range of the mixed genre by using animation not for trickery but for plumbing the emotional depths of the female artist and male photojournalist who meet, not-cute, in her story. When cartoons intervene, they express grief and loss, fear of commitment and dreams of escape. Meanwhile, the couple, their friends, families, and exes stumble through a live-action life with lots of fate and a touch of free will. LOOK BOTH WAYS is at heart a tale of love and mortality, exploring with delicacy how we see life when haunted by death. And Watt has the sophisticated narrative skills to pull it off. When Brigitte Ikin (Jane Campion's producer) coaxed her into features, the faith was not misplaced: Look Both Ways is a dazzlingly energetic film that proves yet again that nothing is off limits to the down-under imagination. Watt's muscular tour de force goes for the jugular of both genders, energetically disassembling their emotional armatures while a sprightly musical soundtrack reassures us that silver linings may be found amid the storm clouds. Watt is a wonderfully original and talented filmmaker who is animated by a tenderness that goes beyond cinematic style. ~ San Francisco International Film Festival Director: Sarah Watt Country: Australia Year: 2005 Runtime: 100 minutes Awards: Australian Film Institute Award - Best Direction/Best Film/Best Screenplay/Best Supporting Actor, Brisbane International Film Festival - FIPRESCI Prize, Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards - Best Actor/Best Director/Best Editor/Best Film/Best Screenplay, IF Awards - Best Direction/Best Editing/Best Script, Toronto International Film Festival - Discovery Award Principal Cast: William McInnes, Justine Clarke, Anthony Hayes, Lisa Flanagan, Andrew S.
