What is today the United States' Southwest was once Mexico's northern frontier (1821 to 1848), and before that the Provincias Internas or Internal Provinces of Spain. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo between the U.S. and Mexico ceded the Southwest to the U.S. after the U.S. - Mexico War from 1846 to 1848. Since then, the combined population of Mexicans and Mexican Americans, in southwestern cities founded by their ancestors such as San Francisco and San Antonio has grown to 18 million. There have been a number of social, political and cultural experiences that caused Mexican Americans to seek ways and means to combat challenges, with solutions including mutual aid societies, nonprofit organizations, labor unions and political organizing. These activities have produced many Mexican American social and political leaders. About the speaker: Santos C. Vega, Professor Emeritus, ASU, conducts community documentation programs. He involves himself in research, writing and education projects. Vega holds five degrees: B.A., M.Ed. (UA), Bachelor of Laws (Blackstone School of Law), M.A. in theology (USF), and a Ph.D., with emphasis in adult education, (ASU). Vega has taught for 40 years in various academic institutions, and has published numerous encyclopedia articles and other articles in the popular media. He also does academic research related to his topics of interest. Gourmet coffee is provided by Whole Foods.
