Designed by Arthur Burnett Benton, a pioneer of the Mission Revival style of architecture, the San Marcos Hotel came to be known as one of the most prestigious hotels in the country drawing the rich and famous from all over the United States. Celebrities such as Christian Dior, Errol Flynn and Fred Astaire were among the seasonal visitors.
