Born and educated in Quebec, Canada, the city of Chandler owes not only its name to Dr. A.J. Chandler, but its entire framework. Dr. Chandler planned out the city's design (based on 'The City Beautiful' project). He started the Consolidated Canal Co. which was responsible for the irrigation of land from the Salt River. He and his brother Harry brought hydro-electricity to Chandler and purchased thousands of acres of land for farming cotton. Dr. Chandler was the founder of the Bank of Chandler and the Chandler Improvement Co and was responsible for building the San Marcos Hotel in 1913. Dr. Chandler and Frank Lloyd Wright had plans to build a 2nd resort that never manifest. As the first mayor of Chandler, Dr. Chandler's foresight created the framework for the highly innovative city of today.
