The promise of work, cheap land and a new town with a great growing season drew settlers from all over the United States to Chandler. While the business district of Chandler grew quickly, the residential areas developed more slowly. Building materials were expensive, so most settlers erected tenthouses on their town site lots. By 1912, these temporary structures dotted the Chandler landscape. Dr. A.J. Chandler, who sold the lots on which the tenthouses were built, did not want the area to have a look of a boomtown and stipulated that the tenthouses were to be replaced by permanent dwellings as soon as possible. These simple wood-framed structures were easy to build and were practical for the climate. Even the well-to-do lived in these temporary dwellings during Chandler's early history.
