Fountain Hills Community Theater is proud to announce the opening of the classic baseball musical Damn Yankees. What better way to spend a summer night? Damn Yankees is a modern retelling of the Faust legend set during the 1950s in Washington, D.C., during a time when the New York Yankees dominated Major League Baseball. The musical is based on Wallop's novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant. Damn Yankees opened on Broadway at the 46th Street Theatre on May 5, 1955, transferred to the Adelphi Theatre on May 16, 1957, and ran for a total of 1,019 performances. Directed by George Abbott, the production starred Gwen Verdon in the role of seductive temptress Lola and Ray Walston in the part of Mr. Applegate (the Devil). The musical also featured a young Jean Stapleton before her career-defining role as Edith Bunker in All in the Family. The production was Bob Fosse's first Broadway hit as a choreographer. Special Independence Day Performance: Special early performance at 7:00pm on the 4th of July, so that patrons can enjoy the beautiful fireworks display visible from our parking lot and patio area after the show!

Good show, good timing, good acting by all the kids. Especially liked Sherlock Holmes, his sidekick Watson, the blind Butler as well as the Irish Cook. Really loved the hunchback! The gags and set were great too! Another fine moment for Ross Collins! This youth theater does very fine work on a limited budget and doesn't get the recognition it deserves! Collapse

My husband and I saw this on Sunday afternoon and thought it was pretty good. Maybe the two leads were slightly miscast, but Maria could sing the phone book and it would still be entertaining. Supporting players made this show work. The actor playing the Captain was just ok, but the end scene where he sings Edelweiss was very moving. Nuns were a little "pretentious" with their singing, but that is the nature of singing like that anyway. Heartwarming, humorous and dramatic performances, all in the right places. Collapse

Actually, MANY of the performers on the Fountain Hills stage are professional singers/actors. And the director is professional, as well. Just because these actors donate their time to entertain the community does not mean that they have not done professional work in the past. I know many that have. But because it is a community theatre, you will see various levels of talent and experience in the actors in each show. But don't assume that there are no professionals mixed in with the newbies! Pretty good show, nuns were good, enjoyed Elsa and Lisel. The Captain was miscast, didn't have the presence, or acting ability to pull role off. I don't think commenting on the age of Maria is inappropiate. The role calls for an actress in her 20's and the actress is clearly 20 years too old. Does it matter? It does if the goal of the theater is to strive for "quality theater". To judge if the actor is doing a good job he/she must fit the role in all aspects of the character. Age is critical to portray the role. It is not up to the actor (although I think a professional thinking person can refuse) the director has the responsibility to cast the show. If he doesn't understand the show or cares about what the author has created then it rests on his shoulders. I wouldn't suggest actors in the show comment/review in this forum, it's for the audience. I haven't seen this show in a while, and I forgot how interesting the second act becomes. Maria and Rev. mother were great. Captain wasn't strong enough and probably needed to be older. Elsa had great voice but walked through her part. Max actor had depth you don't normally see in musicals. Kids were weak, but Liesl had a terrific voice. Didn't like the sets and some of the staging. Saw Sound of Music tonight, loved it. Wondering why other reviewers are being snarky about Maria being too old -- who CARES about her age if she can pull off the part??! She is slim and pretty, has a lovely voice and is convincing in the role. Cute kids. Nuns were out of tune sometimes but put forth a good effort. Mother Abbess has MAJOR vocal chops! I want to hear more from her. Captain, Elsa and Max are a pleasure. We will hear more from the talented girl playing Liesl ... Rolf also. Fine direction, remarkable use of theater space that is very very small. Collapse

I am a season ticket holder and have seen all the shows the last 4 years and I was disappointed. Maria and the Captain were just miscast. Maria ,a real talent, was TOO old. I have seen many young (20's) actress that would have been wonderfull and the Captain is just not masculine enough. There are parts for everyone, just not these parts for these actors. The nuns were good, Elsa did a nice job, Max was an amateur. They do have a childrens theater and I would have thought they could get kids that could sing, they are supposed to win the festival.I can't blame the actors for accepting the role, any praise or fault rests with the director perhaps. The last Rodgers & Hammerstein show they did (Oklahoma) the leads were 15-20 years too old, use the good actors you have. Please I love this theater. Collapse

I was happy that they included the new songs from the movie and also kept the songs that were not in the movie (Max and Elsa had terrific voices and I forgot how much I liked their numbers). Captain and Maria were decent, but a little corny. Kids were a little stiff. Mother Superior had amazing vocals but only so-so acting. Max had great comic timing, and I loved his expressions during the concert scene. Liesl was in "Into the Woods" and was equally good here. I have seen the girl who plays Elsa in many shows and she was underused here. Collapse
