    The Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing at Arizona State University presents novelist Jane Smiley as part of its Fall 2008 Distinguished Visiting Writers Series. Smiley published her first novel, Barn Blind, in 1980. Her best-selling book, A Thousand Acres, based on William Shakespeare's King Lear, received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1992. She earned her doctoral degree from the University of Iowa and spent a year studying in Iceland as a Fulbright Scholar. She will perform a public reading, followed by a book signing.
