West Valley Art Museum in Surprise has an extensive collection of Ethnic Dress, costumes from all over the world. Beginning in August, fifteen of the most impressive of these will be on display in the cases built for them in the Hoover Cultural Center of the Museum. Greeting customers in the Hoover Foyer coming into the Museum will be the elaborate and sensational Bolivian Devil Dancer costume. The costume collection began with donations by Dorothy Knop who traveled around the globe with her husband and daughter acquiring representative examples of authentic dress from cultures in the Far East to South America. Knop wasn't looking necessarily for old costumes as much as historically accurate ones, which led her search to the theaters and dance groups of each country as much as museums. The knowledge of these cultures and their adornment was accumulated in a book she wrote later in life entitled Collections and Recollections which is available in the Museum Store. Curators George Palovich and Lori Toczek have chosen this particular group representative of the Museum's collection as a starter for an extended program throughout the coming years which will feature more of the Ethnic Dress Collection than has been shown previously. In addition to the exhibitions, more supplemental material will be added in the form of a new page on the Museum's website and more programmed information within the Museum as well.
