This party charmer has everything going for it; funny, generally self-mocking and poignantly insightful. In this witty farce, mild-mannered host (John Sipple) quarrels with his wife (Barbie MacBride), insults friends, and forces drinks on the unwilling all in pursuit of his ambitions. He is striving for perfection; trying to orchestrate chance encounters by waging a war against spontaneity. If that isn't enough, he has invited a merciless critic (Kira Galando), from a major New York newspaper, to review his every move. In keeping with Gurney's style critics see a parable about the theater itself, which tries to impose a degree of spontaneity out of an artificial setting and is subject to the same kind of critiquing that the poor professor invites. Director, Richard Schultz, captures the essence of Gurney whose works resonate a larger theme and makes this more than just a casual cocktail party but rather an unforgettable occasion.

This production was so bad it was embarrassing to watch! The acting was horrible, and the director had the actors moving around so much on the tiny set, it made my head spin! Costumes were deplorable (men in Tuxedos at this party and women in day dresses?) And the set looked like a Goodwill store! Theater Works has got to do better if they are going to charge $20 a seat! Took the wife to Peoria Center for the Arts to see "The Perfect Party". Experience was mixed. The play itself was great. The actors seemed confident and had great chemistry. What troubled me was the venue. Getting into the show was pricey, drinks were pricey, and parking was terrible. With such challenging parking one would have thought the theater must have been sold out. It wasn't! As a matter of fact the theater was nearly empty. Such a shame! This show deserves better.
