Add Review/CommentThis party charmer has everything going for it; funny, generally self-mocking and poignantly insightful. In this witty farce, mild-mannered host (John Sipple) quarrels with his wife (Barbie MacBride), insults friends, and forces drinks on the unwilling all in pursuit of his ambitions. He is striving for perfection; trying to orchestrate chance encounters by waging a war against spontaneity. If that isn't enough, he has invited a merciless critic (Kira Galando), from a major New York newspaper, to review his every move. In keeping with Gurney's style critics see a parable about the theater itself, which tries to impose a degree of spontaneity out of an artificial setting and is subject to the same kind of critiquing that the poor professor invites. Director, Richard Schultz, captures the essence of Gurney whose works resonate a larger theme and makes this more than just a casual cocktail party but rather an unforgettable occasion.
