Generation gaps are pushed to their limits in this touching, warmhearted comedy about a spirited elderly couple, their divorced, middle age daughter and her fiancé's teenage son in Ernest Thompson's On Golden Pond, presented by Scottsdale Community Players and directed by Joy Strimple. On Golden Pond is a touching, funny, and warmly perceptive study of a spirited and loveable elderly couple facing their twilight years. Time they know is now against them, but perhaps another summer on Golden Pond still awaits. On Golden Pond first premiered on February 28, 1979, at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, New York City. The play launched the newly renovated Apollo Theatre, re-establishing legitimate theater productions under the new banner of the Ford Center, which later premiered other well-known productions as Bent, The Fifth of July, and The Guys In The Truck. Frances Sternhagen received a Tony nomination in the Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Broadway Play category for her performance. The play was revived on Broadway in 2005 with James Earl Jones and Leslie Uggams. Ernest Thompson wrote the play and the adapted the screenplay to the movie of the same, which earned him an Oscar nomination. The movie was released in 1981 with Henry Fonda, Katherine Hepburn, Dabney Coleman and Jane Fonda. Jane Fonda bought the play for her father in 1980, Henry Fonda, to play the role of Norman Thayer; she hoped the role would give her father an Oscar, which it did.
