Shakespeare Sedona returns for its eighth season bringing to Northern Arizona the finest in professional classical theatre. This year the festival returns again to its original setting, outdoors, under the stars at the historic Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village. Opening the summer season on Thursday, June 30, 2005 will be the romantic comedy and perennial Shakespeare favorite Twelfth Night featuring one of the Bard's most amusing characters: The pretentious Malvolio who gets his comeuppance from the three reprobates Sir Toby Belch, Maria, and Feste the Clown. This is a remount of the hit Southwest Shakespeare Company Production that played in Mesa last fall to critical praise. Of Twelfth Night Mark Turvin, of Goldfish Publishers, wrote: ' Southwest Shakespeare adds another enjoyable offering to its record with this inventive production. Sakren and company continue to prove themselves the leader in classical theatre in the valley in impressive fashion.' Chris Page of the Tribune called it 'the closest thing to a sitcom the Bard ever proffered……such wonderful acting going on.' and Chris Curcio of The Arizona Republic summed up 'Once the raucous humor takes over….Southwest Shakespeare Company's Twelfth Night fills the night air at the Mesa Amphitheatre with laughter. In Jared Sakren's efficiently staged production, the colorful characters, and the craziness they create, shine.' Company favorite Maren Maclean (who was Kate in last season's Shrew) stars as Viola. The second production is Arms And The Man, a sparkling romantic comedy from start to finish. Penned by George Bernard Shaw (who also wrote Pigmalion and Major Barbar), Arms And The Man is one of the funniest and cleverest send-ups on the pretensions of honor, snootiness, and nobility ever penned, in which language may be the most powerful ammunition. Capt. Bluntschli escapes battle by hiding in a lady's bedroom where he meets the Beautiful but naïve Raina, who later coins a nickname for him: The Chocolate Cream Soldier. This is a brand-new production which will travel to the valley and be performed in the fall at the new $94million Mesa Arts Center, and will feature the return of Andi Watson who entertained Sedona audiences a few seasons ago in The Merry Wives of Windsor. The play was made into an operetta and has been produced by nearly every major Shakespeare Festival in the world. Join us for this festive, funny, and romantic adventure story perfect for a summer evening. All productions will take place at the Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village and are fully professional.
