Since the late 1930s, when Frank Lloyd Wright camped in the desert foothills of the McDowell Mountain to begin building Taliesin West, apprentices have lived in simple dwellings in the desert. First year apprentices generally live in the simple 8-by-8 foot square shepherds tents. After a year or two in a tent, apprentices often choose to design more elaborate shelters or update existing ones. Apprentices approach their shelters as living laboratories for architectural discovery as they become their own architect, their own builder, their own client, and their own tenant.
