The musicians of The Phoenix Symphony invite the public to join them in support of their colleague by attending a benefit concert for violinist Ioana Dumitriu, who is battling cancer.

The concert, Rumanian Rhapsody, will take place at Symphony Hall and will include works by Beethoven, Mahler, and Khatchaturian as well as the orchestral showcase Rumanian Rhapsody No. 1 by George Enescu.

Soloists will include Soprano Rita Litchfield singing arias from Bizet’s Carmen, Associate Concertmaster Magadalena Martinic-Jercic performing the violin solo from Schindler’s List with the orchestra and Dimitri Lazarescu performing Ciprian Porumbescu's Balada with Pianist Larry Loeber.

The audience is invited to meet the musicians in the lobby following the concert. Background music will be provided by symphony flutist Joe Corral and his jazz trio.

    About Ioana:
Born in Rumania, Ioana immigrated to the United States in 1980 following the successful defection from Communism of her husband, violist Dan Dumitriu, the previous year. Their dream to live in freedom and perform in a major American orchestra was realized when they both won positions in the Phoenix Symphony in 1981. They became citizens in 1986, raised three children and have performed in the orchestra for nearly three decades.

The members of the orchestra were shocked to learn recently that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had undergone a mastectomy in 2004. The reappearance of cancer has caused her to break her silence. She hopes to achieve complete remission with alternative medicine and the help and support of her family and the orchestra, as well as fellow music lovers, both known and unknown.
