Mesa Southwest Museum announces the opening of a new exhibition, Descanse En Paz, The Art of Handmade Grave Markers in the Southwest, by local photographer Dick George. Dick George, a local photographer, writer, editor, teacher and historian, explores the folk art of the handmade grave marker. Descanse En Paz invites viewers to be a witness to a disappearing tradition and to examine how the Southwest culture has changed over time. The images are of extraordinarily moving relics of Southwest America's past. The tradition of handmade grave markers goes back about 150 years. This exhibition shows many graves, and the artist draws upon their largely, but not exclusively, Hispanic culture and their place in Western culture.
