Arizona's Ancient Ocean looks at Arizona 300 million years ago, when a warm shallow ocean covered one-half to two-thirds of the state. During the Early Pennsylvanian Period, a warm shallow sea covered much of Arizona. Paleontologists call this body of water the Naco Ocean. Fossils found in the Naco Ocean are not what they seem. To the modern viewer, many of these fossils look like plants, but are, in fact, animals. Fossils from this sea are found in many parts of Arizona, but the exhibit focuses on the fossils found east of Payson. Dr. Robert McCord, exposes the truth about some of the best known and most familiar of Arizona's fossils. 'I suspect most people really don't know what these creatures are. I am pleased to be able to share this information with museum visitors,' says Dr. McCord.
