What is it that really intrigues us about Halloween? Is it dressing up and trick-or-treat; the innocent fun of costumes and candy? Or is it ghosts, shadows and fog- the tantalizing thrill of the unknown around every corner? We love the thrill of fear. The possibility of a darker world, a world where humans are not the only beings stirring and are not in control, entices us. Walking into the Phoenix Little Theater this October, you will experience the temptation of a world that is as compelling as it is terrifying. Scorpius Dance Theatre's A Vampire Tale returns to tell the story of a young innocent who gets pulled into the world of the undead. Scorpius Artistic Director and choreographer Lisa Starry has teamed up with award-winning playwright Raymond Shurtz and local composer Ryan Breen to create a new cult classic- an original story that follows the seduction (and eventual destruction) of a lost young woman who allows herself to give in to her fascination with these compelling creatures. As the mist parts and the lights come up, we are introduced to the central character, a young woman struggling with identity, lost in her own world. She is at first a willing prey for the vampires because their world offers deliverance from her ordinary life. The power of this story is the timeless theme of innocence lost. At first fascinated by the strange creatures she encounters, her curiosity leads her deeper and deeper into their world until retreat becomes impossible. The theater is transformed into a tomb, the shadowy cave these night dwellers inhabit, with unusual creatures coming out of every crevice. Vampires cling to a massive scaffolding, climbing and morphing in and out of the shadows, until descending to escape daylight in dark coffins. Vampires perform an aerial dance suspended from fabric, and hang in cocoon-like bags. And the climax involves an aggressive, seductive duet between the two lead vampires on a grand piano, a scene that concludes with the taking of the lost girl's soul. The lost girl is lost forever, and has fallen completely into her new existence, with no hope of salvation. Says Lisa Starry, 'I want to attract people who like dark stories. All the vampires out there.' Let yourself slip into darkness with the lost girl. Don't miss A Vampire Tale, the new classic vampire story that will haunt your dreams. Photo Credit: Michel Sarda

First rate show! Great soundtrack. Sexy costumes. Passionate dancing. Solid character acting. Contrary to other reviewers, I believe that "Strange Man" is essential for his story-telling and stage presence leading one scene into the next. All of the group dances were quite impressive, especially the coffin love-making orgy in deep red. I've got to experience this again. Next time, I'll bring friends and sit in the front row. Will definitely return for the next project, too. Bravo Starry Scorpius! Collapse

This was my first year for the show. It was a wonderful evening. The choreography was excellent and I loved the use of ropes before the show and fabric during the show to allow the vampires to fly. From the moment the doors opened all the actors were in character, setting the mood and unsettling a few of the patrons. The troupe is athletic and professional. If you like vampires or love dance, you should make this part of your holiday celebration. I am looking forward to seeing more shows by this troupe. Collapse

So this was my first time seeing Vampire and I was blown away. The dancing, the costumes, the stage, the music, everything was AMAZING!! I really enjoyed how it told this story through the art of dance. It kept me constantly wondering what would happen next. I would have to say my favorite pieces were the fabric and the circus like piece. Overall I really enjoyed the performance and highly recommend seeing this to everyone. You won’t be disappointed; trust me. Collapse

Once again I was drawn into the realm of A Vampire Tale. This would be my third year seeing this production and once again I was left in awe! Lisa Starry is a master at her craft. I was so impressed with all the new elements of the show this year including a real live narrator of the story. I was also very impressed with the new "girls dance" as well. Very technical and all aorund refreshing! Not to mentioned the classic favorites such as the "Fabric" dance with the MEN of Scorpius and the infamous "Coffin" piece as well. The whole show is in your face dance that is sure to impress any audience of any age! Oh and if I may leave you hanging. . the closing of the show. . . you do not want to miss! In the end of it all, Lisa Starry has created a timeless work of art and has no shame in letting it show. Her dancers are some of the strongest I have seen in a while, each one of them brings a new and colorful element to the show. Brava! Collapse

They say that theatre is dead... but for Scorpius Dance that's a GOOD thing! I have attended all three years of "A Vampire Tale" and each year am more impressed than the last. It offers a different side of dance - one that is a little darker and allows the audience to expand their idea of storytelling. I really appreciate that each year the show changes slightly while telling the same story. It gives you a reason to come back and see how they have evolved. My favorite performance is the fabric piece with three dancers suspended from the ceiling. It seems intimate and creates a change in pace. Most of the show is dark and vibrant so it is a great contrast (not to mention awesome acrobatic movements that can sometimes be missing in modern dance.) Overall, I think it is a good show that lets people break out from their routine and enjoy the "spirit" of the season. Collapse

I was pleasantly entertained when I happened to catch the first show of A Vampire Tale. I had not seen the production in the previous years, but was enthralled throughout the entire performance. It’s no Broadway show but for a local dance theatre company it was believable and fun. Watching the trio of men in the aerial piece was worth the price of admission. Good stuff. Collapse
