Haroun lives in a city so sad its inhabitants have forgotten its name. In spite of the permeating sadness, Haroun's father, Rashid, is extraordinarily cheerful and is a renowned storyteller. One day, Rashid's storytelling dries up. Desperate to help his father, Haroun embarks on a journey to the Ocean of the Streams of Story, the source for all storytellers. Haroun and the Sea of Stories is the first novel Salman Rushdie published after going into hiding, and the reader, aware of his plight, sees it mirrored in the repressive Khattam-Shud. There is an underlying message about the importance of free speech and independent thought, but it is also a beautiful story about the love between a parent and a child. Appropriate for all ages. Credits: By Salman Rushdie; Pam Sterling directs.

Visually this was kind of fun but I took my kids to it after seeing the very fun THE LOST ONES and I found HAROUN... just okay. My kids were bored. I thought some of the costume stuff was new and different--loved the fish!--but many of the actors looked like they had no idea what was going on. Collapse
