Desert Stages needs to learn how to pick shows that they are capable of producing. Gypsy definitely was not in there range of capabilities. From awful set changes to the midi trackings, this show trudged painfully along. The only relief came in the form of Michelle Cuneen as Dainty June. Go watch her in the first act and leave at intermission. Collapse

The stripper scene second act was priceless, complete with outlandish costumes and gut busting gyrations, but I have to say the highlight of the evening came in the form of Katie Belle Collins in the role of Mama Rose. At times it seems as though some were born to play certain roles and this is certainly the case for Collins. Showcasing Rose's obsession with stardom by exploiting her children and bringing across the degrading way she pushed her second hand daughter into a life of burlesque egoism. It is a sight to be held and a force to be reckoned with. She is a vocal powerhouse and at times drowned out the mic with her brassy belt. By the end of the evening it was clear to see why casting would have been so easy for this role. Although almost 3 hours long, the time flew by as you participated in the infectious laughter and got caught up in the life of this scandalous showstoppper. If you are a fan of old Jule Styne numbers and the saucy tale of Gypsy Rose Lee, then this is the show.
