Power Paws Assistance Dogs learn 90 commands such as opening and closing doors, turning lights on and off, pushing elevator buttons and retrieving dropped items which allows physically-challenged people to live more independent lives. Socialization and being able to perform their duties in an uncontrolled environment is crucial to their ultimate success as a service dog. Visiting a variety of settings helps the dog become confident and relaxed. A visit to the museum with its constant flow of people, interesting sounds (roaring dinosaurs), and frequent distractions provides the dogs with a opportunity to remain focused on their tasks in a very challenging situation. The Mesa Southwest Museum will recognize the 5th Annual Service Dog Awareness Day. Some of the Mesa Power Paws trainers and their dogs will conduct demonstrations showcasing the abilities of these amazing dogs. The trainers will also answer your questions and provide information about the Power Paws program.
