Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present a recital by world-renowned pianist Yundi Li. The performance is part of the In the Spotlight Series sponsored by Scottsdale League for the Arts and is presented with support from Linda and Alan Englander. A superstar pianist and household name in his native China, Yundi Li has exploded onto the international stage. One of the most sought-after pianists in the world today, Li is widely praised for his precise, crystalline technique, his fluidity on the keys and his boundless enthusiasm. Li's musical career began with the accordion at age 4, and his prodigious talent was recognized one year later when he won the top prize at the Chongqing Accordion Competition. At age 7, he began his journey to greatness on the piano and burst onto the European scene at 18, claiming first prize at the 14th International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 2000 as the youngest winner of the prestigious contest. His subsequent rise to international acclaim has made him a hero back in China.

I had attended Li's similar concert last Friday in La Jolla, CA, and I was left somewhat disappointed. Last night, at Scottsdale Center, Li's performance satisfied all the high expectations I had from listening to his recordings. This included the satisfaction of hearing Chopin played with good expression without mannerism, with much brillance without exhibition. In regard to an exhibition, his performance of the work of Mussorgsky left me the best and lasting impression. To the point of thinking that perhaps Li's somewhat skimpy attitude of not giving an encore could have had that itention. Now I am left with a curiosity: will I ever have the experience of attending a piano concert that tops this one? Collapse
