The infamous Marquis de Sade has been imprisoned in the asylum of Charenton for endangering public morals. As a form of therapy the hospital's patients are allowed to take part in plays, and de Sade sets out to dramatize the death of the French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat. With its cast of sociopaths, schizophrenics, and narcoleptics, Marat-Sade is a wild celebration of insanity, a terrifying pageant bursting with color and music.

The two leads in this show, Wes Martin and Franc Gaxiola couldn't act their way out of a paper bag, but some of the supporting cast were delightful to watch, Andrea Tripodi, Steve Hamma, Danette D'Anjou, and John Rose kept the stage alive with their presence. Wes Martin needs to take Directing 101 again because he seems to forgotten a little thing called SIGHTLINES. Unless you were sitting in the front row you couldn't see most of the staging on the floor and on the sides. This show reminded me of some high school drama class trying to do some "high class" theatre, with the emphasis on TRYING. It was a nice attempt, but certainly not worth the price of my ticket. How can a theatre agree to do a show like this and then do a bad job? It gives contraversial shows like these a bad name. The director obviously didn't get the point because almost all the actors were completely one dimensional, instead of the complex characters within characters they were supposed to be! I saw this performed several years ago and was really looking forward to seeing it again from a different perspective. Instead, I saw weak performances from the two main characters, overacting by several others and a total dissapointment that was putting me more to sleep than anything else. I think the people who say this is great just haven't seen it done right! Trust me, when it is, it's absolutely amazing! You sit in your seat and feel like the inmates are going to come after you. Sad is certainly the word for today....... Collapse
