Is climate catastrophe inevitable, or is it a feverish fantasy of the early 21st century? To understand these alternative possibilities for the future, scientists look to the climates of Earth's ancient past and the environments of planets other than our own. This lecture will survey the lessons learned by studying these 'alternative Earths', and the perspectives they provide on how our civilization is shaping the Earth's future.
