Concerts Under the Stars: Pink Martini
Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts
May 13, 2008
The wildly entertaining and eclectic Pink Martini has been described as a cross between a 1930's Cuban dance orchestra, a classical chamber music ensemble, a Brazilian marching street band and Japanese film noir. This 12-piece little orchestra from Portland, Oregon, is at home on any stage performing its romantic, multi-lingual repertoire. Image Credits: Sherri Diteman and Adam Levy

I had attended Li's similar concert last Friday in La Jolla, CA, and I was left somewhat disappointed. Last night, at Scottsdale Center, Li's performance satisfied all the high expectations I had from listening to his recordings. This included the satisfaction of hearing Chopin played with good expression without mannerism, with much brillance without exhibition. In regard to an exhibition, his performance of the work of Mussorgsky left me the best and lasting impression. To the point of thinking that perhaps Li's somewhat skimpy attitude of not giving an encore could have had that itention. Now I am left with a curiosity: will I ever have the experience of attending a piano concert that tops this one? Collapse

I laugh at the "warning" at the end of Mr. Riggle's bio -- "Important Information: Contains adult language and themes". Unfortunately, it doesn't make up for the lack of laughs at his "show". I don't doubt the show would have gotten some "laughs" from 8th grade boys. Discussing farts, hairy balls, stenchy mens' rooms and calling people trolls and morons, demonstrates neither wit nor creativity. He's no prince charming or mensa candidate. And, contrary to what he thinks, is not very informative to us females. What a naive fellow, to think women don't know that men's rooms are scuzzy! So what else is new? Collapse

We came to the show expecting topical humor similar to what we've come to enjoy on the Daily Show. What we got was an interminable hour in which we were bored by recounting of occurrences in Rob's life that by no measure could be considered funny. To make matters worse, they were often gratuitously vulgar, often insulting to classes of people (i.e., older people) and worst of all delivered in a manner that seemed to drag on forever. In short, there were NO funny moments during the entire performance. Collapse

We're fans of the Trilogy but short of fanatical (we've never dressed in costumes, gone to any conventions, and we sold all of our toys years ago at our mom's garage sale). That being said, I think that anyone who loved these films as they were originally presented can get into this performance. The action is non-stop (except in our case when the mic failed, but that was OK). The impressions are not dead-on, but it's all there and you know who is talking. Ross does a great job poking fun at the silliness and absurdities so it's not just a dull rehash of the plots. Do yourself a favor and check out the YouTube clips. We really enjoyed the show. This show was so bad it was funny! First of all, they sold tickets far to the sides, and nobody could even SEE Curtis or his "props". Several people asked to move (us included) and others just sat craning their necks. The "props" were placed 35' at the BACK of the stage, making it IMPOSSIBLE for about 20% to have an unobstructed view. Now, the show: How can I say it...the worst thing I have ever tried to sit through...yes, we got up and left. After being 20 min late to start, he took 22 min. break after half hour of....dancing with (1 )poor magic trick. I think K-Fed has better dancing skills, but thruout the show you can see that DANCING is what this guy is all about. 15 minutes into part 2, (with 1 more magic trick), we left. The best part of the whole show was his assistant - who did a good rendition of pole dancing. This show seems geared to 8 year olds...who frequent strip clubs.?? WHERE'S THE MAGIC?? Also, this was SLOW, not high energy. Don't bother with this show!!! Collapse
