This show doesn't get done often and that is a shame. This is a wonderful show, great cast, very funny. I loved it.

Tempe Little Theater continues to challenge and entertain audiences with the grown-up humor employed to convey the tale of a classic "love triangle" between man, wife and Sylvia, a stray dog. The set is minimal, but handsome and the lighting and effects compliment the story-telling, but this four-person cast could deliver a performance on a street corner. Sylvia was manifested with abandon by a talented actress who portrayed the canine spirit with warm, fuzzy and at times, potty-mouthed assertion. Husband and wife are well played by seasoned valley players and weaving throughout the story another actor portrays three supporting characters. Each of these characters add wit and humor to the foundation laid by the principals. With a deft touch and attention to detail this actor's roles range from the "read every book on the subject" guy in the dog park to an upscale female, and most hilariously, the gender ambiguous psychiatrist trying to unravel the triangle tangle. I laughed so hard when "Sylvia" tried to attack the cat, I will let you imagine what almost happened. The actors were so funny and so poignant when called for. I loved this show. I highly recommend it. Even if you are not a dog person you will go home wanting a "Sylvia" of your own. All the actors are very well cast. The set is perfect and basic as not to distract from this well written script and the polished performances of the actors. Go see this show. You will leave the show with so much to talk about and such a good feeling and don't we all need that these days? Supporting community theater is always a good thing!!! Collapse

It is unfortunate that the two previous reviews were so harsh. Although I do not have a theater background, I do find that often the most enjoyable shows are ones that theater purists tend to be overly critical with. This was an entertaining show, solidly acted and well cast. Noah hit his character dead on and comedic timing was spot on with the entire cast. The sets were well done considering the stage space. It was cleverly directed and acted and turned out to be very entertaining. I did note that some of the singing was weak on the women's part and occasionally the dancing during the singing became overbearing and intrusive with too much leaping and a high school show choir feel. However, overall I felt that it was cleverly done, presented both the conflict and comedy appropriately, and was a well spent evening. Collapse

The cast puts good effort into this dated piece that's more likely to be appreciated by a pre-boomer audience who can understand its decades-old humor and style. It is a little long and the flow is uneven, but that's more on the material than its presentation. It's definitely not a show for young children; the "mature themes" notice in the foyer is accurate. Theater Lover's note about singers is a little off target: program notes show that two of the singers (Noah and Goldie) have classically trained voices that carried well, and most of the rest have extensive musical theatre chops. I couldn't agree more with Theater Nerd's review...this show is WAY too long and WAY too corny. And the direction was almost childish. Was this supposed to be children's theater? The acting was pretty solid, but some of the voices were really weak (including Noah himself, who really has to carry this show!) The cardboard cut out set pieces were amatuer hour. I have seen numerous shows by Tempe Little Theater and this one is the most unpolished and unprofessional I have seen...save your money! Collapse

After seeing Two by Two, I was somewhat numb due to the artic conditions in the theater but also because of the production itself. I was prepared for an enjoyable experience but left disappointed. Most of the cast is decent, but the direction and choreography are amatuerish. They do try hard to entertain, but it is a long three hours. The only "real" moment came toward the end of the show when Noah's wife, Rachel, dies. Even though the singing was off-key and rough, the emotions were there. If TLT manages to get a grant or a large donation I would suggest the purchase of wireless mics as it is difficult to hear the actors, especially when they turn their back to the audience. Collapse
