Chandler Symphony Orchestra
The San Marcos Symphony offers free live performances of classical and other fine music to audiences from Chandler and other East Valley cities.
With an almost fanatical dedication to quality, the 90-musician San Marcos Symphony (one of the finest in Arizona) has become a heady, soul-satisfying cultural jewel that helps fulfill the promise of its host city of Chandler's slogan, "Where values make the difference."
The orchestra's outstanding artistic reputation is largely attributable to its energetic and critically acclaimed conductor, Jack Herriman. He has become a magnet to some of the Valley's truly exceptional professional musicians, music teachers, and very talented non-professional musicians, some of whom travel far distances to play for him.-

The usual seniors filled the hall for this free conceret by amateur musicians. Somebody must be doing something right out there. Phoenix and Mesa Symphonies take heed. Guest conductor Lasansky presented a heavyweight program of Wagner (not one but two slow and dark leit motiv filled death songs), Sibelius (why did the orchestral solo English Horn have to stand in front? Too much ego), and Liszt (featuring the ever-energetic Kathy Jones on timpani and an impressive percussion section). Too bad that you can't have good French Horns, trumpets, and violins unless you're willing to pay some bucks. That breathless "mariachi" trumpeter must go. At least that over-the-hill hornist can still make a phrase, albeit way flat half the time. A fun place for an adventurous musician to test his/her skills on major repertoire. Not a fun place for the more sophisticated classical music audience. Collapse
