Before King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, the Dodds Bros. and Louie Armstrong, there was Buddy Bolden. Playwright Gus Edwards has researched this nearly-mythical free-spirit, and gives us a fascinating look at his bittersweet life, from his introduction to the trumpet by an old mentor, to his rise to the title of The King of jazz musicians, to his downfall from alcohol and disease. We also get a feel for racial attitudes in the bawdy town that was late 19th-century New Orleans. In conclusion, the story is compelling, the acting is good-to-excellent, and the staging is imaginative. Bravo! Collapse

This is one of my favorite musicals, so I went to see Urinetown with high hopes and low expectations. I'm happy to say that it was a really great production. I loved the cast, especially Lockstock and Little Sally. The set, lights, and costumes were all really incredible, but the best part of the show by far was the choreography. It was appropriate, hilarious, and most importantly, it was indicative of what was going on in the play. It would be easy to just make everything look nice, but it told the story. I have a strong feeling the the choreographer basically directed the show. There are a few weaknesses in the cast, but there are so many good people, so it can be forgiven. I saw the Saturday night show and I just might see it again. Collapse

Involvement in musical accomplishment, going beyond the combined efforts orchestrated instruments or care for mere evidentiary supplement of structure, surfaced in this orchestra of conjured willingness and symphony to play an instrument. Balance among the instruments was not always audible; as they tended to cut each other out through their organized composition: the powerful vehemence of the drums occasionally overpowered the strings and winded instruments. But if this were even a negative to high performance of this musical masterpiece, the rhapsodic, dominating style of the conductor, Timothy Russell, and his musicians could fit with a worthy historical fame, which one would think incredulous if they had not listened to their work in an orchestrated melody just the same as the one I have had the leisure to enjoy.
