Musica Nova
Musica Nova is the antithesis of the traditional yawn-inducing 3-hour concerto. Phenomenal symphonies blend traditional selections, neglected master works and new compositions with interpretive elements such as in-concert talks, displays of relevant artifacts and even lighting effects. The result is a vastly more engaging concert experience. Musica Nova is a new-concept classical music organization with five linked ensembles, each designed to deliver the organization's vision of "classical music for the 21st century."
Musica Nova Orchestra (MNO) is a professional symphony orchestra that blends traditional symphony selections, neglected master works, and new symphonic selections not currently available at any venue in metropolitan Phoenix.
Fine Arts String Orchestra (FASO) is made up of both professional and volunteer musicians, FASO plays some of the most inspired work of the greatest composers.
Musicanova Youth Orchestra (MNYO) is an advanced youth orchestra for students from grades 5-8.
Musicanova Professional Training Orchestra (Formerly known as the Youth Orchestra Scottsdale) is an ensemble of high school and college age professional-musicians-in training who aim to explore the unique vision of Musica Nova as their talents unfold.
Musica Nova Baroque Orchestra was added to the Musica Nova family in the fall of 2004. This orchestra expands the educational mission of Musica Nova; the historically informed performances both fill an unmet need in the Phoenix music scene and serve as a critical way to develop the skills and knowledge of both players and audiences.

The mission of Musica Nova is to play what we can't hear anywhere else. But sometimes nobody ought to subjected to it. Patrick Jonathan's Symphony No. 2 was a total waste of time and effort. "What a piece of crap!" were the first words that came out of my mouth. I'm sure many members of the orchestra would agree, even though they got paid to sit through it. Apparently chosen because his teacher was Arnell, a favorite composer of conductor Cohen, whose symphonies were recorded by Musica Nova but never publicly released (maybe because there's no market for them?). Jonathan is a "not ready for prime time" note jotter who has no clue how to convey a musical idea. Let's hope this premiere is also the burial. It proves that it's not how good you are, but who you know in the business. As for cellist Yehuda Hanani, tell him to stop tapping his toes (no such percussion parts appear in the score). Don't speed up every entrance. Over-the-top showboating. Only redemption: 2nd mvt Thomson Concerto. Collapse

MusicaNova's top notch professional horn section gave a rendering of the rarely performed Schumann Konzertstucke. Rare because it is so hard to find four players of equal talent and cohesiveness. Padglick, French, Rittenhouse, Miles --- three young ladies and a mature gentleman --- distributed the four parts to fit their respective personalities perfectly. The 3rd and 4th horns, usually in a more supporting role, showed beautiful sonorities in their second movement duet. The 1st and 2nd horns repeatedly picked those notes from the strastrophere without hesitation. The warmth of the quartet's tone emanated from the middle of the orchestra in the tight quarters of the Kerr Cultural Center. What will they do for an encore? Berio's Rendering of Schubert's sketches for his incomplete Symphony No.10 was quite enjoyable, thanks to Maestro Cohen's talk. It left this Cat with a desire to explore more of Berio's music. Once again, MusicaNova opened my eyes to new adventures! Collapse

Brave Maestro Cohen and Musica Nova for introducing me to two true classics of the symphonic literature that could not be heard elsewhere within commuting distance. The Stenhammar Piano Concerto was like a Brahms, partially completed by Tchaikovsky, and re-orchestrated by Rachmaninoff, with a patriotic coda by Sibelius. Nevertheless, a wonderful listening experience. I could tell that the Atterberg Symphony was going to be something special from the first few bars. True, he has his own voice. The flutes and horn sections shined. A more acoustically favorable hall would have been the ultimate treat. Let's hop a recording contract is in the works for this all Swedish program. Collapse
