Scorpuis has always blurred the line between dnace and theater. David and Lisa is no exception. The dancers bring the simple story to life adding depth and feeling to each character. James and Tricia shine in title roles of the tourtured lovers David + Lisa, and the chorus was spot on as the other childern in the school. (School for the disturbed as it would seem) The added humor lightened up the story and made the sudience feel at ease I occaisionally tire of watching modern dance that doesn't have a point or seems to be self indulgent for the dancers or choreogrpahers. The dance community in Phoenix is very small and having a show that is approachable for the general publis only helps increase dnace awaeness in the area. Overall it was an enjoyable performance that should not be missed. Collapse

Are you kidding me? Once again Lisa Starry has pulled it off in her endless effort to make a story come to life. Can we say BRAVO! First of all when was the last time you saw the Black Box Theater transformed 45 degrees thus making the stage even better, great idea! Second, loved the performance and drive of every character in the story, well developed and keptm my attention the whole time. Never board with a Starry production, and always look forward to the next one. The tension between the Mom and Son could of made Mommy Dearest look like Joan Cleaver, and the twisted romantic tale of David and Lisa was perfect fitting and well casted. Not to metion the loved crazed duets from time to time from the other characters. In the end, my hat goes off to Scorpius Dance Theater and can't wait to see it again. Keep up the good work ladies and gents. Collapse

Huh? What "mental institution?" My colleague and I did not get that at all. It was more like a Catholic boarding school with the audience sitting in the gymnasium bleachers. We sure got to see the dancers exhibit their youthful athleticism and unfettered energy. It was good to hear them breathing hard after the choreographed chaotic "rush" scene that had several near collisions. Lisa appears to have gone conservative with dance steps and dives that could be seen elsewhere. The "divided" love scene with James & Tricia showed tremendous sexual tension. Nicole was intense as ever, but how about giving her a softer role once. The ending was lame. The music did nothing to help. Most of us were waiting for the next scene. This production could have used a dominant male figure like a Doctor/Schoolmaster. Collapse

Lisa Starry and the Scorpius Dancers reach new heights literally and artistically in this wonderful performance lasting a little more than one hour. The audience is cleverly engaged even before the "real" performance begins and easily stays involved through the eyes of a whimsical child who finds curious happenings during her visit to an art museum. The staging is professional and accurately reflects the artistic imaginations found in the paintings of Michael Parkes. Dance and movement is delightfully presented providing both visual and acoustic satisfaction. I found it exciting to have dancers floating beautifully through the air and on stage just barely beyond my reach. The music and dance is fresh, creative and well executed. My 92 year old father thought it was one of the most enjoyable performances he had ever attended and I would have to agree. If you like modern dance, you'll be sorry if you miss this very unique and fine performance. Fantasy is for real! Collapse
