"Matsuri" is Japanese for "festival," and in Phoenix, this is the best time of year to have one! Four stages feature cultural dance, local and visiting Taiko drumming groups, martial arts demos, & a candy-art demo. The festival has grown significantly from five years ago (my last visit to Matsuri), but the koi pools, origami booths, & anime booths remain a staple.
Five years has also brought more food! The sight of Blue Fin Teriyaki's booth on the food concourse made me sentimental: Their teriyaki chicken's still delicious after all these years. You won't find teriyaki sauce like theirs anywhere. Top off your tummy with mochi, that classic red bean-filled rice flour pastry, and a Japanese soda or shaved ice as you let the sun and the Taiko rhythms wash over you, and you've experienced the best parts of festival season in Phoenix.
Definitely worth the free admission, but Matsuri's casual atmosphere and its central and historic location make this event priceless. Don't miss it! Collapse
