    Calo Flamenco: Ballet de Martin Gaxiola

    In Spanish, "Calo" has several meanings - "gypsy", "heat" (short for "calor") and "mannerism; style of communication" - all of which describe the essence of Calo Flamenco: Ballet de Martín Gaxiola, a professional flamenco repertory company based out of Phoenix, Arizona.

    The company began as a concept within a non-profit corporation, but later was spun off to form a separate, for-profit organization. Founded by Martín Gaxiola with the assistance of local artists Amalia Duran and Bernadette Gaxiola, Calo Flamenco began operating independently in June 2003.

    Calo Flamenco is the largest professional flamenco repertory dance companies in the United States. The company is a collaboration of over 20 local dancers and musicians working together under the artistic direction of Mr. Gaxiola. The organization's goal is to embrace the current philosophy of modern flamenco repertory dance companies while providing training and performance opportunities to its participants. Flamenco continues to evolve from its origins as a traditional folk dance to a more modern, theatrical dance form. The dance community is witnessing more flamenco dance companies experimenting with elements familiar to other ballet and repertory dance companies (i.e. full, evening-length dance pieces; theatrical/literary-based story lines and collaborations; cross-genre/cultural fusions of music and dance; more ensemble vs. solo choreographies). With this in mind, Calo Flamenco seeks to create and showcase a superior visual/audio experience that not only incorporates the traditional and modern flamenco dance/musical influences, but also utilizes other dance/music/media to further emphasize flamenco's contextual elements.
