"Arizona History LIVE! in Mr. Ambassador"

Mr. Ambassador: The Life and Times of Raul Castro provides a look at the history of Arizona and the U S as played out in the life of one man and moves quickly through Castro's. James Garcia, playwright, portrays Raul from childhood through his adult years, sharing highlights. The play's audience learns of discrimination Castro endured as a young Mexican-American in southern Arizona schools. Mr. Ambassador's script balances disappointments with laugh-out-loud events and triumphs. The script is an honest look at a man who can be a contradiction. The result is solid entertainment that enriches and enlightens one's understanding of both Arizona and U S history. Eight cast members play mutiple roles effectively; sets are minimal; the cast is, in general, more than adequate in focusing attention on their roles. A few obvious errors in dialogue were likely due to opening night jitters. At about one and one-half hours, (excluding intermission), the play wears exceedingly well. Collapse

Inspiring / Hilarious / Sad A very true story that not only needs to be spoken, but expressed the way the writer has been able to express. The actors are able to evoke emotions that we often seek from a performance. Without giving away much of the show, the chemistry between the parents and Vicky was touching, the sheriff's officer Beth placed order on stage, and SWAT officer Bobby steals our heart from the beginning. Everyone has to see the struggle many students are now facing on a day to day basis. Collapse

The piece was highly moving, I had the pleasure of seeing the English version, and it was a great experience. the characters where highly developed, we felt the agonizing experience Victoria has to go through, the struggle Nacho faces to protect those in need, and Bobby the heart throb police officer that is full of smiles and surprises! I urge everyone to come see this play ripped out of todays headlines. Collapse

Timely, outstanding, excellent production by a great team of actors. Poiniently incorporates so many components of the current state of affairs in the U.S., from the "non-news" to fear mongering, from immigration and The War, to spirituality and the madness of holiday consumerism. The Saturday matinee was, unfortunately, not well attended. You missed an excellent opportunity here, folks. The Colores Actors-Writers Workshop is an up-and-coming theatre group to keep your eyes on, and deserving of community support. Collapse

As a practicing psychiatrist in the community I found the play brilliantly written. Neither my wife nor I have a command of the Spanish language so it was a challenge to listen carefully to the humorous satire spoken in both English and Spanish. This dichotomy of verbal presentation throughout the evolving plot was masterful. Your command of the political situation is vast and your weaving of these issues into the night's entertainment could not have been more effective. From a sympathetic Anglo point of view it caused both of us to leave seeking to research answers to some issues addressed within the context of the evening’s performance. Is this not what one wants to instill in audience reaction? To provoke critical inquiry in a safe place, in a non-threatening manner--What a novel idea!!!! And of course with Marcelino's direction of the actors and the timing was very effective. You make an incredible team! Collapse
