Progressive Theatre Workshop
Progressive Theatre Workshop (PTW) serves as an informal and malleable forum for the creation, development, and performance of highly original pieces of theatre. Although the future of PTW is unclear, it should never be assumed that they proceed without direction. The work produced for public consumption by PTW must always ask specific poignant questions regarding the dynamics of human existence while simultaneously stretching the boundaries of live theatre as an art form. They seek to fulfill these requirements through integrating careful selection of subject matter with organic development of performance text and design. Additionally, they utilize methods of theatricality that will ask audiences to consider the stage as a place of evolution where experimental methods are married with historical standards in order to progress the art form of theatre into the future.

The show is an alternately funny and disturbing look at American pop culture. The production benefits from a strong visual aesthetic and crisp staging by director John Caswell. Unfortunately, the script is about 1-2 drafts away from being done. It repeatedly skewers a range of pop culture figures (Oprah, Madonna, etc.)...but many of them get their respective points across during their first appearance. The script needs to be tightened. But for all of the heightened theatricality, the play doesn't really add much to the pop culture discussion. Collapse

I have to say, this production had me in tears from laughing. At the same time the truth of obsessions and addictions with pop-culture demonstrated in this production kept me involved. I would see this play again and again. There is so much to see on stage and so much going on that one would have to see it again to make sure you didn't miss anything. Ha! Congrats to Progressive Theatre workshop for stepping out of the ordinary. Excellent job! Collapse

A hilarious mix of pop culture references and a bitingly sarcastic commentary on society's obsession with celebrities and physical beauty. The ensemble moves seamlessly through mock newscasts, Grey's Anatomy, and The Oprah Winfrey Show while following the lives of Cheryl and Steve, a celebrity-crazy couple stuck on looking perfect and being like their idols Brangelina (Cheryl) and Britney Spears (Steve). If you've ever mocked TMZ and the Chris Crocker "Leave Britney Alone" YouTube vid, this show is right up your alley. Collapse

A 120 word excerpt is meant to pick the reader’s interest (and ultimately get you to buy tickets). It is supposed to tease the reader like a whiff from a hamburger insinuates its flavor and leaves you wanting to taste it. The excerpt of “Britney Spears for President” taunted me with hints of pop culture saturation, adoption of foreign babies, and an unhealthy obsession with Britney Spears. And it worked. I bought my ticket, showed up early, and sat patiently anticipating a hilarious caricature. After an excruciating hour and forty five minutes, I was left wondering “where’s the beef?” The play is void of the clever subtle references one would expect from a parody. Grotesque at times, drawn out, and repetitive, the play lacks humor, wit, and a story line. It covers nothing more than what the 120 word excerpt describes, and leaves you wanting to sink your teeth into something, but sorry folks, there is nothing. I'm still happy to support the arts and am proud of you for trying. Collapse

This show was hilarious but kind of really creepy at the same time. Definitely something I'd see again. If you want to laugh and think at the same time, then see this show.

It was beautiful, moving, and hard to watch. The movement was especially amazing and I can't wait to see it again.
